Take a small hop just before your opponent makes contact. Land on the balls of your feet with your knees slightly bent.
That is the split step. And it is probably the simplest footwork upgrade you can make right now.
Being a step late is rarely about speed. It is about timing. Most players wait to see where the ball is going before they start moving. By then it is already too late.
