Pickleball Footwork Drills You Should Practice

Your Feet Get You There. But Are They Getting You There Right?

Your feet get you to the ball. Better footwork means better balance, cleaner shots, and faster recovery.

Here are five simple drills that translate directly to the court.

1. Side-to-Side Touches

Shuffle left and right while staying low.

Why it works: Builds quick lateral movement and balance for kitchen exchanges.

2. Side-to-Side Lateral Hops

Hop side to side with both feet together.

Why it works: Improves explosiveness and helps you react faster during fast hands battles.

3. Side-to-Side Forward Hops

Hop diagonally sideward while changing direction.

Why it works: Trains the movement you use when advancing to the kitchen line.

4. Two Feet In, Two Feet Out

Quickly step both feet in, then both feet out using marked spaces or imaginary boxes on the ground.

Why it works: Improves foot speed, coordination, and rhythm.

5. Two Feet In, Two Feet Out (Lateral)

Move sideways through the ladder (like) using the same in-and-out pattern.

Why it works: Combines quick feet with lateral movement for faster recovery after every shot.

Practice these drills for just 10 minutes before you play. Better footwork won't just help you reach more balls. It'll help you arrive balanced and hit better shots.
