Timeouts are something most recreational players never think about until they are in the middle of a tournament and suddenly need one. Here is how they actually work.
Timeout Basics
- Length: Each timeout is up to 60 seconds.
- Games up to 11 and 15 points: Two timeouts per team per game.
- Games up to 21 points: Three timeouts per team per game.
- Who can call it: Either team can call a timeout, after the rally ends.
- Coaching: Coaching is permitted during a timeout.
- Resuming play: Play must resume at the one-minute mark or when all players are ready, whichever comes first. If another timeout is called by either side, the clock resets.
- Televised matches: If your match is being streamed or televised, timeouts may run longer than 60 seconds to accommodate commercial breaks. Even if you are ready to play, you may have to wait.
