Most players practice their volleys standing still. But in a real game, you are almost never standing still when the ball arrives. This drill fixes that.
The Setup
- Partner position: Your partner stands across from you at the kitchen line with a supply of balls.
- Their job: Toss balls high enough for you to volley out of the air, alternating between your forehand and backhand side on each toss.
- Your job: Move laterally to each ball, stay balanced, and volley it with a controlled roll volley instead of just punching at it.
- Focus: Footwork first, then contact. Get to the ball with your feet before you swing.
- What it trains: Footwork, reaction time, forehand volleys, and backhand volleys all in one drill.
