A side out is when the serving team loses the rally and the serve switches to the other team.
This matters more than it sounds. In pickleball, you can only score points when your team is serving. If you win a rally while the other team is serving, you do not get a point. You get the serve. That is the side out, and it is how you get your chance to score.
In singles, the side out is straightforward. The server loses a rally and the serve goes to the opponent.
