The Erne is when you run around or jump through the kitchen to get closer to the net and put the ball away from outside the sideline. Instead of hitting from behind the kitchen line, you are essentially removing that restriction by getting around it entirely.
It is completely legal as long as you jump from behind the kitchen line and land outside the sideline. Two things make it illegal: jumping with your foot on the kitchen line or landing on the sideline. Land outside both, and you are good.
One more rule worth knowing. If you make contact with the ball on your side of the net, your paddle can follow through across the net. But if you make contact on their side of the net, that is a fault. And if your paddle touches the net at any point, you lose the point immediately.
